Scars can appear unsightly for several reasons. They are too wide or long; they are in the wrong direction; they do not have good color match; they may be more elevated or depressed than adjacent tissue; or they may cause distortion of adjacent features such as the lips. Plastic surgery camouflages scars to make them as inconspicuous as possible. It does not remove scarring as that is the way facial skin heals. Multiple techniques are available to make the scars less noticeable.   Acne Scarring Acne causes scarring within the skin as well as under the skin. The pits in acne scarring are damaged skin and the wide pits are best treated with laser resurfacing. The narrow ice pick scars are best treated with excision techniques changing the deep hole to a flatter surface. The last step to smooth the skin is the use of injectable fillers.
